Department of Justice casually looking into abuses of power by big carriers?

Posted under Reviews on Thursday, 9 July 2009 by admin

Filed under: ATT, Verizon Wireless Word on the street has it that the US Department of Justice has started informally looking into whether top carriers have gotten all antitrust-y on us, specifically investigating hardware exclusives and restrictions on the services third parties can offer on the network (open access, anyone?). The carriers potentially being called into question here — most likely Verizon and AT&T, seeing how they’re the largest by a long shot and have both made recent acquisitions to beef up their footprints and positions — say that they’ve received no notices of investigation, so if this is really happening, it’s still in the earliest stages.

Filed under: Software, Apple, iPhone OS You won’t find an official announcement anywhere on the iPhone dev-team’s blog yet, but a new version of the redsn0w jailbreak, 0.8, has just been posted to its official torrents that apparently includes 3GS compatibility (in addition to support for the 3G and original iPhones plus the second-gen iPod touch, as before). Whether it’s better than GeoHot’s purplera1n jailbreak is unknown, but hey, the more, the merrier — even the iPhone hacking community isn’t immune from brutally competitive market forces, eh

Goodnight, sweet Mino: Music Video shot end-to-end on an iPhone 3GS

Hm - perhaps those iPhone 3GS mounts aren’t as silly as we thought (Not really- they’re still silly.) When videographer Kenny Mosher was tasked with shooting a music video for acoustic-folk band BJSR, he decided to skip the usual rig for something a bit more relevant in the moment: the iPhone 3GS. Now, this music video isn’t the first of its kind; rapper GOSHone recorded one on a jailbroken iPhone 3G, months before Apple ever condoned video recording on any of their mobile handsets. That said, it’s the first we know of shot through an Apple-endorsed method, and it’s a pretty nifty video at that.
